What OC Animal Care means to our OC community.

Picture
For so many years, open-admission public animal shelters* were thought of as sad places, the last stop for abandoned, neglected and abused animals to go, perhaps with little chance for finding a home.

(*Please Note - OC Animal Care provides fully open-admission services to the cities with which it is contracted, and continues to provide limited services to non-contracted OC cities.)

Although it is true that more pets are currently produced within our OC community than there are available homes for them, things are changing – for the better!

Our sheltering facility has improved dramatically over the years, and so has the idea of what a shelter should represent to its community.

The days of public animal shelters as sad places for animals, and a place that people are reluctant to visit - are thankfully becoming a thing of the past.  The old attitude is being replaced by a new and positive idea of an open-admission animal care & sheltering facility. OC Animal Care is taking a preventative, proactive approach to managing pet overpopulation and improving adoption services via education and working together with the communities it serves.

Today’s OC Animal Care endeavors to occupy a more prominent and positive place within our OC community, operating with transparency, and doing everything possible to ensure that OC can feel confident in the quality of humane services it provides.

OC Animal Care has experienced a lot during its history in Orange County.  The last decade has seen OC Animal Care undergo a renaissance of professionalism, operational and procedural upgrades and best of all – a revived commitment to providing nothing less than excellence in humane animal care & sheltering services for OC’s homeless pets.

For the many good people who have put in so much time and effort over the years working to improve conditions as best they could, the circumstances and resources necessary for success at our County shelter were not always readily available.

In so many cases in the past, the hopes and goals of those who wanted and tried to make improvements at the County shelter - were not always tangible.  Therefore, they often struggled against a tide of negative public sentiment and a myriad of factors that contributed to the lack of immediate progress that everyone wanted to see happen.

As time went on and the conditions and resources necessary for the shelter to improve fell into place, we began to see an open-admission animal care & sheltering services facility that would operate with a greater sense of transparency and professional integrity.

OC Animal Care is rapidly becoming a place that our OC community can be proud of – and a sheltering facility that inspires a sense of confidence.  Confidence that our abandoned, neglected and abused pets are being cared for and protected according to the dignity and standards they deserve, and our community expects.

We have seen many positive and dramatic changes in the morale and sense of professional pride in the management and staff at ACS over the years as well.

The people of ACS have chosen to work amidst an intensely emotional environment every day, which isn’t easy.  These people deserve the support and encouragement of our communities.  It is truly inspiring to know that our shelter is managed and operated by people that truly care about the animals in their care, and who and are committed to the success and integrity of ACS.

So what does OC Animal Care mean to our community?  It means that OC expects a high standard of care and humane services from its public, open-admission animal care and sheltering facility.

The quality of ACS is a direct reflection of the standards that the people of OC require when entrusting the care and protection of our most vulnerable residents with tax funded County agencies.  Whether it’s caring for and protecting the elderly, children or animals within OC – the safety and dignity they are afforded speaks volumes about who we are as community.

Transparency, honesty, professional integrity and results are the expectations of the day, and such standards are the hallmarks of the safest, healthiest, happiest and most successful communities.

Everyone wants to feel good when they think about our county’s open-admission sheltering facility, and no one wants to return to the days in which animal shelters were sad places with little hope for success.  We should be able to feel secure in the knowledge that our animal shelter is managed according to best possible standards.

With the dedicated, enthusiastic and committed management and staff of OC Animal Care – we can feel confident that our shelter takes this important responsibility seriously.

No, the sheltering environment is not a perfect one.  Until the day that enough people;

Take responsible pet ownership seriously – showing the utmost respect for their pets and their neighbors,

Agree to make spaying & neutering their pets a priority,

Resist the urge to purchase purebred pets from breeders that do not operate in both a legally and morally ethical way (with a valid breeding and business license),

Decline to shop at pet stores that sell pure-bred pets obtained from puppy mills,

Make sure that their pets have current ID tags and microchip identification at all times,

Ensure that their pets cannot escape and become lost from their homes and properties, and…

Report any illegal activities that harm animals – such as dog fighting and the illegal breeding and selling of pets.  (Please remember that these crimes can be reported anonymously)…

…then open admission animal shelters will continue to struggle with the morally and emotionally repugnant reality of having to euthanize wonderful pets who don’t deserve to be the casualties of our community’s neglectful habits relative to pet ownership.

Slowly but surely, people are collectively becoming more aware and supportive of the preventative actions mentioned above.

If everyone does their part, then one day we will see a shelter at which the need for euthanasia of adoptable pets will be the exception – and will only be necessary in the most extreme circumstances.

Our sheltering facility reflects the standards and priorities of our community as a whole.

So lets do everything we can to help OC Animal Care to become the best it can be for  OC - and to serve as a worthy example for other public, open-admission sheltering facilities to emulate.
